In the previous post we discussed long term emergency water storage, now I would like to touch upon water purification. Along with storing water for emergency use it is highly advisable to have some way of purifying water from a source other then your stored water. If for some reason your main emergency water supply is inadequate due to either a prolonged emergency or due to loss or contamination it is wise to have a water purification filter and water purification chemicals on hand.

As discussed in the water storage post a few drops of bleach can be used, also you should have a few gallons of bleach stored as it makes a great disaffecting solution for most biological contaminants.

There are many different types of water purification filters on the market, but make sure you do not just have a water filter, as you need to remove biological contaminants from the water not just solids and chemicals. The water purification filters we like the best are the ones made by a company called Katadyn.

Katadyn is the world wide leader in portable water purification systems and has at present a market share of over 50 per cent. Katadyn develops water filters, that use chlorine or silver based material for sterilization and mobile desalination equipment for traveling, outdoor, camping and marine applications. Numerous relief organizations and military special units all over the world deploy Katadyn products for survival and life saving.

Because you never know what's in the water, it makes sense to always protect yourself with a quality water purification system. A pristine stream may be safe one day and contaminated the next. It all depends upon what's happening upstream. Microorganisms generally come from human and animal waste and are spread by rain and run-off. The EPA reports that 90% of the world's fresh water supply is contaminated to some degree or another.

The U.S. Government Center for Disease Control and Prevention states:

"We highly recommend treating water from every source in the backcountry. You don't know what's upstream - not just people but animals - and you can get infected."

Katadyn makes many models of water purification filters ranging from backpack models to larger "camp filters" that can provide water for many people at one time. Katadyn also has a complete line of water disinfection tablets and even water desalinators to turn sea water into drinkable water.
